Pragma 2000 - Automated Publishing Solution

Pragma comes from Greek and means practical.
This is our philosophy: we always focus on the client’s practical problems and solve them.
Three are the key concepts of our business:

  • Formalization: the first step is analyzing the content creation process of the client, in order to formalize it and identify roles.
    This phase consists of development of customized tools and staff training.

  • Technology: we constantly strives to make use of the best tools available on the market and in the open-source community. Currently our technical infrastructure is also based on Adobe products - FrameMaker, InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop and Illustrator - on XML technology, the Python programming language while MySQL and Postgres databases are also widely used.
    We developed:
    - PODS (Page On-Demand System), framework for building, managing and using publishing projects, with a dynamic web interface and distributed resource allocation;

    (see demo)

    - LP-WEB, (for companies in the "office supply" area)
    a web-based CMS coming from a five-years experience in the "office supply" area. Differently from traditional CMS, only devoted to the web, LP-WEB covers all the needs of automatically laying out printed catalogues (with texts and images), being able to generate high-resolution PDF of "product cards" and catalogue pages as collections of product cards. LP-WEB has features for managing automatically all the images and a system for choosing and positioning them into the "product cards" so the user does not need any skill in using specific software for laying out publications (such as Adobe InDesign or Quark XPress);

    See LP-Web details in PDF

    - TOUROP, (for tour operators)
    a web-based CMS coming from a ten-years experience in tour operators area. TOUROP is a CMS allowing management and generation (using the PODS system) of "product cards" and catalogue pages for tour operators. TOUROP manages product descriptions, images and tables that constitutes the information asset of a tour operator. TOUROP has high-level tools both to manage the page-sequencing of a publications and to place accurately the images into pages;
    - DOQU, (for technical manuals production and laying out)
    a web-based application to manage and automatically lay out technical manuals. DOQU has highly innovative features such as: a system for automatically generating all the tables of the manuals from data loaded into DOQU database by the customers' technical staff; a system to "propagate" any change made in a manual to another manual containing the same text; an automatic page laying out system which can generate hi-res PDF or Adobe InDesign files without any manual intervention of skilled people; a translation system allowing to translate online and in a collaborative way the texts of any manual and to re-paginate it using the "target" language
    - ELPS (EMEA Literature Publishing System)
    an innovative tool for a collaborative way of translating all the company documentation, developed for Carrier and Toshiba. By ELPS, it is possible to upload a "master English" document which can be shared on the Internet by all the country branches abroad. They can translate it into their own language using a database of pre-existing phrases. Finally, the system takes care of repaginating automatically the translation and delivers to the requesting country branch a hi-res PDF file for printing.

    All these tools are made available for the customers relying on our outsourcing services to manage their publications.

  • Effectiveness: the service is highly customized and the client needs are always the focus of our attention. A very tight feedback cycle allows the client to be satisfied and the final product to meet the requirements.
Our history:
Pragma 2000 begun in the traditional publishing industry offering paging and photolithography services for prestigious clients like Mondadori, Feltrinelli, Hoepli, Masson, Saggiatore, etc.
In the beginning most of the job consisted of transferring textual data from word processors to standard publishing software.
Always up to date with the latest technologies, Pragma 2000 was an early adopter of the PDF standard and soon focused on techniques for automating the publishing process by designing and developing ad hoc software.
Pragma 2000 is a pioneer in the Database Publishing field, and by using several Desktop Publishing products, from the precursor FrameMaker to the most mature InDesign and XPress, we successfully dealt with difficult tasks, and are proud of the aesthetically appealing results obtained, like those in the Tour Operator field.
Today Pragma 2000 introduces the novel concept of On Demand Publishing: the client is more and more the focus of our attention and he can take advantage of customized tools and web interfaces for managing his own publication on his own, free to govern his own production process.
